PHNOM PENH, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Siem Reap Provincial Court on Thursday sentenced an Indian national to 14 months in prison for sexually abusing an underage girl, an anti-pedophile agency said in a press release.
Raj Deo, 46, a clothes seller living in northwestern Siem Reap province, was convicted of "Indecent Assault by Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Kingdom of Cambodia" against one girl aged 14, said the press release issued by child protection NGO Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE), which assisted the police in a probe leading to the arrest and conviction.
The court also ordered him to pay 750 U.S. dollars in compensation to the victim.
Raj Deo was arrested by Siem Reap Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile protection police in December last year after receiving a complaint from the victim.
Cambodia launched an anti-pedophile operation in 2003 in a bid to end its reputation as a haven for child sex offenders. Since then, dozens of foreigners have been imprisoned for child sex crimes.
