Russian cigarette consumption drops 17 pct in two decades

MOSCOW, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The level of cigarette consumption in Russia has dropped 17 percent over 25 years, the Russian news agency TASS reported Tuesday.

"For the first time in a period of 25 years, the level of tobacco consumption went down by 17 percent in Russia due to the implementation of anti-smoking campaign," Russian Deputy Minister of Healthcare Dmitry Kostennikov was quoted as saying.

He added that alcohol consumption in Russia also declined. Therefore, the problem of alcoholism among the population and deaths from alcohol-related conditions dropped 19 percent.

According to data released Monday on the World Health Organization website, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and lung disease are the most common causes of deaths of people aged less than 70 years.
