NEW DELHI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least four civilians were killed and 15 others injured in fresh firing by security forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir Tuesday, a senior police official said.

The number of civilian deaths has now risen to 64 in violence in the region since the killing of 22-year-old Burhan Wani, Hizbul Mujahiddin's poster body for new militancy, by Indian security forces in July.

"The latest firing took place in Indian-controlled Kashmir's Budgam district when some protesters started pelting stones on a patrol van of the security forces in the morning. The security forces also retaliated by opening fire, leading to 19 casualties," the police official said.

While four people died on the spot, 15 others who sustained bullet injuries have been admitted to nearby hospitals, where the condition of some are said to be serious, he said.

Indian-controlled Kashmir has been on the boil since Wani's death last month.
