Indian PM to visit Vietnam

NEW DELHI, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be visiting Vietnam to promote bilateral relations between the two countries, officials said Friday.

Modi would embark on the tour to Vietnamese capital Friday evening.

"I will reach Hanoi in Vietnam, marking the start of a very important visit that will further cement the close bond between India and Vietnam," Modi said. "My government attaches a high priority to our bilateral relations with Vietnam."

Officials said Modi will meet Vietnam President Tran Dai Quang and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc during the visit.

"We wish to forge a strong economic relationship with Vietnam that can mutually benefit our citizens," Modi said. "Strengthening the people-to-people ties will also be an my endeavor during the Vietnam visit."

Earlier in the morning, Modi took to social networking website Twitter to extend greeting to people of Vietnam on their National Day.

"Greetings to the people of Vietnam on their National Day. Vietnam is a friendly nation with whom we cherish our relationship," Modi said.

A senior official in India's foreign ministry told media that Modi's visit to Vietnam was aimed at strengthening bilateral ties including defense, security and trade between the two countries.

From Vietnam, the Indian prime minister will directly fly to China to participate in the G20 summit to be held in Hangzhou city.

G20 is the group of the world's 20 largest economies - Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union (EU).

The first G20 leaders' summit was held in Washington in 2008. The 10th summit was held in Antalya, Turkey in November 2015.
