额VIENTIANE, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Drunk driving, speeding and other traffic violations were among contributing factors in 70 deaths in August, bringing road accident fatalities over the first eight months of the year to 700 in Laos.

Some 714 fatalities were recorded with 5,935 injured from 3,746 accidents over the January-August period with damage reported to 6,883 vehicles, according to the nation's Traffic Police Department.

Motorbikes were involved in 95 percent of accidents, while 90 percent of those killed in accidents were male, with the highest accident frequency occurring on weekends and festival periods, state-run media Vientiane Times reported Monday.
