COPENHAGEN, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Two Danish F-16 fighter jets had taken part in a U.S.-led coalition attack that killed scores of Syrian soldiers, the Danish military has confirmed.

In a statement released on late Sunday night, Defence Command Denmark, the supreme military command authority of the Danish armed forces, said Danish fighter jets were part of the mission.

"The international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) conducted a series of attacks on a suspected IS position in the area around Dayr Az Zawr in Syria on September 17," said the statement.

"Two Danish F-16s took part in these attacks together with other nations' aircraft. The attack was stopped immediately following Russian reports that a Syrian military position had been hit," it said.

Defence Command Denmark said it is "obviously regrettable if the coalition has mistakenly hit anything other than IS forces," adding that the defence will fully cooperate with the coalition about the investigation.

Danish Defence Minister Peter Christensen, was quoted by local media DR Nyheder as saying that he fully supported the coalition investigation and that Denmark would continue its fight against IS.

Denmark has been part of the international coalition fighting the IS since October 2014. Danish military fighter jets began bombing IS targets within Syria in August after a parliament approval.
