BRATISLAVA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The EU summit here last week contributed towards Slovakia's security, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said during the question time in parliament on Thursday.
"Security has become the dominant issue of the EU. Political decisions that have been adopted and will be translated into important legislative moves to significantly boost security in the EU," stressed Fico.
According to Fico, European Union leaders realize that if they don't offer any better alternative to the public, further referenda on exits of individual countries from the EU will likely follow.
"We could witness a break-up of this structure that is of vital importance for us," said Fico.
"We talked about the EU as a new global player. Nevertheless, can the EU be a global player if it isn't able to be on an appropriate level in military terms?" posited Fico in reference to the Frontex and defense initiatives agreed to at the Bratislava summit. Even if the EU currently wanted to do anything in this sphere, it doesn't have adequate structures for this, he said.
Concerning migration, Fico said 65,000 migrants alone were waiting in Greece to be allowed to enter further into Europe, while thousands more were on the coast of North Africa.
"We've significantly changed the approach towards migration by returning to the statements made by the Visegrad Four (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) urging for a thorough protection of the outer Schengen border," added Fico.
