MANILA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A high-profile inmate was killed and three others were injured when a riot took place Wednesday morning inside the Philippine New Bilibid Prison (NBP), a senior government official said.

The stabbing incident happened at around 7:40 a.m. local time at Building 14 where the high profile convicts are being housed, said Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre.

The DOJ, through the Bureau of Corrections, has supervision over the NBP located in Muntunlupa City, Metro Manila.

Authorities identified the fatality as Tony Co, a convicted drug lord, while those hurt were Vicente Sy, Peter Co and Jaybee Sebastian.

The incident took place amid an investigation being conducted by the House of Representatives committee on justice on the alleged proliferation of illegal drugs inside the national jail.

The House has summoned some high-profile inmates in the probe to shed light on the illegal activity, which allegedly benefited former Justice Secretary and now Senator Leila de Lima.
