Egypt: 40 sentenced to 25 years in jail over IS links

Source: Xinhua   2016-09-28 22:44:35

CAIRO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- An Egyptian court sentenced on Wednesday 40 people to 25 years in prison for belonging to the Islamic State (IS) militant group and inciting disorder and sectarian strife in Egypt, state-run Ahram Online reported.

The criminal court of Sharqiya province north of the capital city of Cairo convicted the 40 defendants of receiving training in Syria and Iraq to create mayhem back home.

Egypt has been facing a growing wave of terror attacks since the removal of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

About 1,000 people have been killed and thousands more arrested in a massive security crackdown.

Anti-government attacks killed hundreds of police and military personnel over the past three years, with a Sinai-based militant group loyal to the IS claiming responsibility for most of them.

The Egyptian military killed and arrested several hundred of IS-affiliate extremists in the northern part of Sinai Peninsula as part of the country's war on terror.
