Chinese tennis star Wu hopes to keep consistency at ATP tour

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese male tennis star Wu Di on Saturday said he hopes to be more consistent in future ATP tournaments and be able to improve his ranking to a much higher level.

Wu, who's claimed his first ATP World Tour main draw victory at the just ended Chengdu Open last week, lost to John Millman of Australia in the first round of the China Open qualifying on Saturday.

"I can play one good match and also I can play 10 matches badly. So the key is to keep consistency in the matches. When I play a good point, I need to improve the following three to four points," said a disappointed Wu after the match.

"I need to keep my level of play to be more consistent," said Wu, adding that his first ATP victory from Chengdu was so relieving.

Wu performed well in the beginning of the season, breaking into the Australian Open main draw for the first time and also doing well in some other important tournaments, but then his form is plummeting.

"Maybe after the first months of the year, my level of play is declining to some degree. Right now my ranking has slipped to 193, I need to figure out my strengths and weaknesses," said the 25-year-old, whose highest ranking was 140th in April.

With more and more competitions held in China, Wu and other Chinese players could compete with wildcards, but he said it's become more like a burden.

"I feel the pressure in China. Right now I can often get the wildcards and feel the pressure all the time.

"But we need to rise up to the challenges, to make breakthroughs. We must try to win the tournaments. We received a lot of support from the Chinese fans, so we would like to try our best to win more," he added.
