THE HAGUE, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A professional Dutch photojournalist was shot dead, allegedly by an Islamic State (IS) sniper in Sirte, Libya, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Sunday night.
Jeroen Oerlemans, 45, was wearing a bulletproof vest, but the bullet flew past the protection and touched his heart, Dutch media reported.
In the Libyan coastal city of Sirte forces loyal to the Libyan government and fighters of the terrorist IS have been fighting fiercely against each other for months already.
"Oerlemans is a journalist who kept going where others stopped," Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders said in a press release.
"I wish his partner, children and other family a lot of strength with this great loss. A great photographer is gone," said Koenders.
