VIENTIANE, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A series of activities are scheduled to be held in Laos' northwestern Xayaboury province on Oct. 15-17 to mark the 36th World Food Day together with International Day and National Week for the Eradication of Poverty.

The celebrations are set to include a large number of participants from Lao capital Vientiane and other 11 provinces across the country, the Vientiane Times quoted an organizing committee official as saying on Friday.

A highlight of the activities will be an elephant caravan along with a fair and an exhibition featuring a wide range of local products. Some 170 exhibition booths will include green agriculture and handicraft products along with food stalls. A local cooking competition will also take place during the period.

A Prime Ministerial Order issued on Wednesday urged relevant ministries and organizations to support the celebration of World Food Day and International Day and National Week for the Eradication of Poverty to highlight the fight against poverty and hunger.

Organizations in Laos should promote eradication of poverty and hunger by holding activities during the period, such as fairs, sports competitions as well as training workshops among other activities, reads the order.

The World Food Day is designated on Oct. 16 annually while the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty falls on Oct. 17. Enditem
