KABUL, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Several people were feared killed and injured Tuesday night after gunmen attacked a shrine in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, where hundreds of mourners were observing Ashura rituals during holy Muslim's month of Maharram, sources said.

"At least four terrorists were involved in attack on Ziarrat-e-Shakhi shrine in western Kabul. There is fear of casualties and hostage taking incident. So far, we have no more details, but we will try to get more information," a source told Xinhua anonymously.

Witnesses said that they heard three explosions and ensuing gunfire roughly at 07:50 p.m. (local time) at the shrine, which is located near the Kabul University in Jamal Mina locality of the city.

Government troops cordoned off the area shortly after the blast, keeping people from gathering.

Several ambulances and fire trucks were heading to the site of the blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
