HAVANA, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Cuban authorities on Thursday welcomed a Venezuelan navy ship carrying humanitarian aid for the victims of Hurricane Matthew.

The ship docked Wednesday at Santiago de Cuba's port (800 km east from Havana) and its cargo included more than 300 tonnes of machinery and construction materials for home and road rehabilitations in the affected areas.

The shipment comes with great feelings of love and solidarity, said the counselor at Venezuela's Embassy in Cuba Milagros Rodriguez during the welcome ceremony broadcast on TV. She passed on greetings from Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to the Cuban people and government.

Hurricane Matthew struck the eastern province of Guantanamo on Oct. 4, and caused heavy economic losses.

The storm did not leave behind any casualties in the Caribbean island, due to a timely evacuation by the Cuban Civil Defense of more than 179,000 people.
