WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton Wednesday hoped for a peaceful transfer of power to president-elect Donald Trump.
"Last night, I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country," Clinton said in her first public concession speech after losing the presidential election to the Republican candidate.
Meanwhile, Clinton expressed her deep disappointment for losing the presidential campaign."This is painful and it will be for a long time,"she said.
The nation proved to be "more divided than we thought", said Clinton. But she urged unity and told her supporters that "we must accept this result and look to the future."
She also encouraged her supporters, especially young people who have just started their professional public and political careers do not afraid setbacks.
U.S. Republican Donald Trump early Wednesday defeated his Democratic rival Clinton in presidential election and became president-elect of the United States.
Trump expressed "gratitude" to Clinton in his victory speech and called for Americans to come together as a united people.
