CANBERRA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The former head of Australia's state-owned television network has agreed with claims from a respected Indigenous leader that the network is fundamentally racist towards Aboriginal Australians.

Earlier this week, Indigenous activist Noel Pearson said the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) - the government-owned and funded network - was content to continue to report on the widespread Indigenous disadvantage to fill air time.

On Wednesday, former head of the ABC, Maurice Newman backed Pearson's stance and went a step further by saying that other Australian "left media" outlets were only too happy to rely on negative Indigenous Australian stories.

"It's not just the ABC, it's the left media, it's the commentariat, it's the elites who feel morally superior and think simply by throwing money at people that somehow or other they're going to be cared for," Newman told News Corp on Wednesday.

"They have constantly condemned anything which suggests that the Aboriginal people should be self-supporting, self-reliant and should have property rights like everyone else, rather than community ownership."

Newman added to Pearson's claims by saying that "Fairfax Media, the ABC, The Guardian, SBS and Crikey" were all fundamentally racist organizations.

Newman's comments come just a day after the current ABC administration released a statement condemning Pearson's stance.

The ABC said it was "at the forefront" of recognizing Indigenous talent, and has gone so far as to set up "Indigenous units to better reflect Indigenous culture in staffing and story-telling."
