JERUSALEM, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Israeli police said they shot a Palestinian attacker, who died later in the hospital, after he wounded a cop in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
The incident took place in East Jerusalem's Old City.
A spokesman for Israel's emergency medical service said that the attacker stabbed a 35-year-old police officer, causing him light injuries and attacked a 12-year-old Palestinian teenager boy who sustained light wounds.
Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said that the attacker walked from the Damascus Gate toward the hospice, approaching two policemen who were patrolling the area. "He pulled out a screwdriver and stabbed one of the police officers in the head," Samri said.
In response, the other police officer shot the suspect, Samri added.
A later police notice reported that the suspect, identified as a 21-year-old resident of the West Bank village of Beit Suriq, was taken to the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, where he died of his wounds.
The incident came a week after Israeli forces shot and killed an 18-year-old Palestinian youth after he allegedly tried to stab them near a West Bank junction. No Israelis were injured.
An ongoing wave of violence in the West Bank and Israel has claimed the lives of at least 235 Palestinians and 34 Israelis since September 2015.
