Bulgaria steps up security measures on new year's eve

SOFIA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria has stepped up security measures to boost safety during new year's eve celebrations, Deputy Prime Minister Rumiana Bachvarova said Friday.

Bachvarova, also the minister of interior, said the Bulgarian authorities had stepped up security measures at bus and railway stations, airports, markets and resorts as well as other public places.

There would be enhanced presence of police officers, luggage and identity inspections and checks on vehicles, the minister said.

Bachvarova said Bulgaria increased its security 10 days ago after the attack took place in Berlin, Germany.

She called on the citizens and visitors to the country to show understanding and patience towards the applied measures.
