Gun battle leaves 7 Taliban militants dead in N. Afghanistan

SARIPUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least seven militants have been killed and 13 others injured as clash flared up in parts of Afghanistan's Saripul province, 350 km north of Kabul on Sunday, provincial governor Mohammad Zahir Wahdat said.

In talks with reporters here, the official added that five rebels had been killed and eight others injured after the clash erupted in Sangcharak district which lasted for 12 hours, forcing militants to flee.

In similar fighting, two more militants affiliated with Taliban outfit were killed and five others injured on a road connecting Saripul to the neighboring Jauzjan province on Sunday.

However, he confirmed that two pro-government militants had lost their lives in the fighting.

Taliban militants are yet to make comment on the situation.
