NEW DELHI, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake Tuesday hit India's northeastern state of Tripura, officials said.
According to Indian Meteorological Department, the earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 2:39 p.m. (local time).
"The epicentre of earthquake was Dhalai district of Tripura located at 24.1 degrees north latitude and 91.9 degrees east longitude," the information released on website of Indian Meteorological Department said. "The depth of the earthquake was 28 km."
The earthquake was felt in the entire state. Reports said panic-stricken people rushed out of buildings and gathered in open streets.
"I came out of the house after everything started trembling," Balu Krishna, a local resident in Dhalai said. "The earth was shaking and I feared house will collapse."
So far there were no reports of any damage or loss of lives in the earthquake.
