Chinese Spring Festival celebrations thrill Rwandans

KIGALI, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Rwandans and foreigners gathered at Kigali Serena Hotel for a treat of one of the best Chinese shows by Xinjiang Art Theater Song and Dance Troupe from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China.

This was during the launch of two-day celebration of this year's Chinese Spring Festival. The two-day event, running from January 19 to 20, is jointly held by Rwanda's Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda.

The Chinese were joined by their friends in Rwanda for the cultural festival to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Year of the Rooster.

The Chinese performances featured sharp wrist and head movements which left many revelers clamoring for more.

Several instruments such as cups, plates, bowels and Kung Fu were put together to complete the set up.

Spring Festival is the most important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. People return home for family gathering.

Aziz Ablimit thrilled audience with his flute skills, while Ezzat Elyas's Youth Dance' strokes left the crowd mesmerized.

"If they (actors) were in Rwanda we would be going for their shows at any cost. This is awesome. They've made my evening," one Kigali resident told Xinhua after the show.

Urukerereza, the artistic treasure of Rwanda also entertained the guests, with folk and modern dance.

Shen Yusu, the secretary to the Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda explained that the cutlery symbolizes Chinese love for guests while the Kung Fu symbolizes their passion for protection of their people.

Talking to the media, Rwanda's Minister of Sports and Culture Julienne Uwacu noted that Rwanda-China cultural exchanges are growing to greater heights.

"We appreciate the embassy of China in Rwanda for having organized such a wonderful event. Cultural exchanges between Rwanda and China will continue. They (Chinese) will also be inviting our artistes to go and perform in China to showcase our culture there," she said.

This is the second time a Chinese artistic delegation has been invited by the Chinese Embassy in Kigali.
