SKOPJE, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said on Monday Macedonia reported an H5N8 avian influenza outbreak at a farm in a southwest region of the country.

Meanwhile, local media reported that the infected birds were found at a farm in the village Moroisht of the Struga region.

The first case was detected on Jan. 27 during one of the controls being undertaken in the farms across the country, reports said, quoting Director of Macedonia's Food and Veterinary Agency Zoran Popovski.

The presence of this virus was later on confirmed by the laboratory tests by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Popovski said.

Macedonian authorities reportedly immediately started the procedures foreseen for such cases and decided to destroy the birds and disinfect the area to prevent further spread of virus.
