KABUL, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Some 14 Taliban militants were killed and 17 others detained after Afghan army's Special Forces conducted operations in two provinces Wednesday night, army sources said on Thursday.

In one operation, a Taliban local leader named Qari Shafiq together with three comrades was killed and five others detained after the troops targeted a compound in Shinwari, an area on outskirts of Kunduz city, capital of northern Kunduz province, Abdul Khalil, a press officer of army's Division 20 Pamir based in the region, told Xinhua.

The raid was launched based on a confirmed tip-off and no security force member or civilian was harmed, he added.

In southern Kandahar province, 10 militants were killed and 12 others captured by personnel of army's Corps 205 Attal, according to a statement issued by the Corps.

The Afghan security forces had beefed up security operations recently as militants were attempting to take territory and consolidate their positions during the winter in the mountainous country.

Taliban militants, who have been on rampage since the beginning of 2015 when the Afghan security forces assumed the full responsibility of security from the U.S. and NATO forces, have yet to make comments.
