Squad rotations or no? Luis Enrique's dilemma as Barca face Athletic

Source: Xinhua   2017-02-03 18:02:22

MADRID, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- To rotate or not to rotate his squad: that is the question facing Barcelona coach Luis Enrique ahead of Saturday's visit of Athletic Club Bilbao to the Camp Nou Stadium to face FC Barcelona.

Last Sunday saw a Barcelona side with several key players rested scrape a lucky draw away to Betis thanks to Luis Suarez's late equalizer, while Wednesday saw a full strength Barca go a long way towards assuring their sixth final appearance in seven years with a 2-1 win away to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final.

With the return leg to be played in Barcelona on Tuesday, Luis Enrique has to decide whether to continue with the players who performed on Wednesday, or to bring others, such as Lucas Digne, Arda Turan and Denis Suarez, while Rafinha and Sergio Busquets are available again after injury.

Barcelona are still angry after seeing a goal not given against Betis after the ball crossed the line and fans could give the matchday referee Gonzalez Gonzalez a difficult afternoon, especially if he gives any major decision against them.

Athletic arrive in Barcelona seventh in the table and looking to avenge their Cup exit 4-3 on aggregate against the Catalans, while knowing it is 19 years since they won a league match in the Camp Nou.

The two Cup games saw Athletic beat Barca 2-1 in Bilbao, before an injury hit side lost 3-1 in the Camp Nou. Coach Ernesto Valverde has recovered players from injury following that game and Oscar de Marcos has given greater pace down the right, while Benat offers midfield control.

Saturday could also see central defender Yeray Alvarez back in action for the first time, less than 40 days after undergoing an operation to remove a testicular tumor. Yeray was on the bench for last weekend's 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon and with Xabi Etxeita and Eneko Boveda both doubtful with muscle problems the 21-year old could make a rapid return to action.
