SOFIA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian law enforcement officers at the Danube Bridge checkpoint near Russe at the country's border with Romania have seized some 54 kg of heroin destined for Western Europe, officials said Friday.
The illicit drug, split into 100 packets, was found by a customs dog and subsequent screening with a specialized X-ray system in a Bulgaria-registered car with two Bulgarians on board, the National Customs Agency said in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing, the statement added.
Bulgaria, a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe, seized more than 500 kg of heroin in 2016, official data showed.
