MADRID, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The northwestern Spanish region of Galicia has been placed on red alert by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) as storm force winds batter the region.
Winds of up to 130 km per hour have been registered in the area, causing waves of up to 11 meters at the coast.
Flights to Galicia and to the neighboring region of Asturias have been cancelled as a result of the extreme weather and 36 provinces in Spain have been issued weather warnings with orange level alerts all along the north coast to the Basque region.
Meanwhile, torrential rain with up to (and in some cases over) 10 cm of precipitation has been predicted for the western side of the country.
The winds led to the cancellation of Friday's scheduled LaLiga Santander football match between Deportivo de La Coruna and Real Betis.
The Spanish Football League (LaLiga) decided to postpone the game after winds of 120 km per hour damaged the roof of Deportivo's Riazor stadium.
Although rescue services have received around 300 calls in the region, so far there has been no deaths reported.
