SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A fierce gunfight between militants and Indian troops Tuesday morning broke out in the restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted in village Hajin of Bandipora district, 32 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"The gunfight is going on in the village and details are yet to come," Indian military spokesman in Srinagar, Col. Rajesh Kalia told Xinhua.

Reports pouring in from the area said contingents of India troops and police have encircled a house, from where militants were firing on their positions.

Unconfirmed reports said three troops were wounded in the initial firefight. Officials believe two to three militants were inside the house.

"Heavy firing is going on between the two sides," a police official posted in the area said.

On Sunday, four militants, two troopers and two civilians were killed in a similar gunfight and subsequent protests in the region.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.

The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
