NEW DELHI, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The only active volcano in India has begun spewing smoke and lava again, officials said on Sunday.

The volcano is located on Barren Island about 140 km northeast of Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an Indian territory in the Bay of Bengal.

Researchers said the volcano was dormant for more than 150 years, but started erupting in 1991.

"There is no danger to life because on the Baren Island there is no life as such and this island is isolated," Abhay V Mudholkar of National Institute of Oceanography said. "This island erupted in 1991 almost after 150 or 200 years and since then it has shown intermittent activity."

The activation of volcano was reported by a team of scientists led by Mudholkar.

The team has collected samples from the volcano for studying.

Scientists said during the day, only ash clouds were observed. However after sunset, red lava foundations were seen bellowing out skywards from the crater.
