Macedonian prosecutors launch probing into ex-officials for election fraud

SKOPJE, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Public Prosecutors Office of Macedonia announced Monday that it has launched the investigations against several former high-ranking officials of the Interior Ministry.

According to the prosecution, they are under investigation over the cases of election fraud related to the 2014 and 2016 general elections.

The investigations has also been kicked off against several other people from Skopje and the cities of Kumanovo and Strumica, the prosecutions office said in a press release.

There were suspicions that these persons had influenced the voting process and result in different ways.

Although the prosecution office did not identify the persons being investigated, it said that they would collect all relevant reports, data and evidence to confirm the charges.

Macedonia held its last general elections on Dec. 11, 2016 but no government has been formed.

Neither the VMRO-DPMNE party winning a majority of parliamentary seats nor the SDSM party has managed to create a coalition to form the new government. Enditem
