PHNOM PENH, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Preah Vihear temple, one of the world heritage sites, received 56,807 foreign visitors in 2016, up 35 percent year-on-year, according to a Tourism Ministry data on Thursday.

Most of foreigners to the ancient site were from China, South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

Besides, the temple attracted some 109,260 domestic visitors last year, up 27 percent year-on-year, the data said.

Preah Vihear, a Hindu temple, is situated on the top of a 525-meter cliff in the Dangrek Mountains in Preah Vihear temple, about 500 km north of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

The 11th century temple was inscribed on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in July 2008.

The site had been a flashpoint of armed clashes between Cambodian and Thai troops between July 2008 and May 2011 because Thailand claimed the ownership of 4.6 square km of land next to the temple.
