KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Afghan Taliban fighters have confirmed the death of the outfit's key commander Mullah Abdul Salam and shadow governor of the northern Kunduz province.

A statement released by the armed outfit and sent to media outlets on Monday, the Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Majahid confirmed that "Mullah Abdul Salam, the governor of Kunduz province was martyred by U.S. drone attack in Dasht-e-Archi district on Sunday."

Earlier, Governor of Kunduz province Assadullah Omarkhil in a press conference on Sunday reported the murder of Taliban shadowy governor Mullah Abdul Salam in the province, saying the physical elimination of Mullah Salam could prove a major blow to the Taliban in Kunduz and adjoining areas.

Majahid in the statement said that the murder of Mullah Salam would not affect their fighting and the Taliban fighters would continue to fight against Afghan government and foreign forces stationed in Afghanistan.
