Belarusian president suspends tax collection on unemployed people

MINSK, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko suspended on Thursday the collection of a tax on unemployed people for the current year at a government meeting.

Lukashenko said the decree must be adjusted during March. The head of state stressed this decree is not some economic and financial document.

"This is an ideological and moral decree. The goal of the decree is to make people work," the president added.

At the same time, Lukashenko paid attention to the work of the officials responsible for the execution of the decree.

Starting from February, hundreds of people came to protest against the decree, which was signed by Lukashenko in April 2015.

The decree require Belarusians who don't work for more than 183 days a year to pay the tax in the amount of about 240 U.S. dollars.
