Israeli military says its jets strike Hamas posts in Gaza in response to rocket fire

Source: Xinhua   2017-03-16 17:38:14

JERUSALEM, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Israeli jets struck two Hamas posts in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday following rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave, the military said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage as a result of the airstrikes.

"An Israeli Air Force aircraft targeted two Hamas terrorist organization posts in the northern Gaza Strip," the military said in a statement.

It did not say which group was believed to be behind the rocket-firing but noted that "Israel Defense Forces holds Hamas responsible for all attacks at Israel from the Gaza Strip."

Hamas is the organization in control of the Gaza Strip.

Shortly before the airstrikes, a rocket landed in an empty field near the town of Netivot in Israel's Sdot Negev region, without causing any damage or injuries.

Palestinian media reported that before the rocket was fired Israeli bulldozers were leveling land in the eastern Gaza Strip.

Since Israel's 51-day-long bloody military campaign in Gaza in the summer of 2014, rocket fire from Gaza occasionally hits southern Israel, usually without causing any damage.

Israel typically responses with artillery or air strikes.
