NEW DELHI, March 20 (Xinhua) -- American information technology major Cognizant, which has significant presence in India, is planning to lay off 6,000 employees, local media reported Monday.

The company's workforce stood at around 260,000 as of December, 2016, with over 75 percent of them in India. And the layoffs, if going on as planned, would represent a little more than 2 percent of its workforce.

A spokesperson for Cognizant said that "the layoffs are part of the routine annual reviews to weed out non-performers." "The numbers may bounce a percentage here or there, but this is part of our standard practice," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

"This process results in changes, including some employees transitioning out of the company. Any actions, as a result of this process, are performance-based and generally consistent with those we've made in previous years," the spokesperson added.

Industry analysts say that many IT roles will soon become redundant due to the impact of automation on lower-end jobs.
