BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The clash between defending champions Switzerland and Sochi Olympics winners Canada has seen the latter to become the only team stay unbeaten after five rounds in the World Women's Curling Championships 2017 here on Monday, and a nice last stone secured Germany's 10-7 win over hosts China.
Canada scored three points in the fourth end and stole two more in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead before the break.
Although Switzerland tried to narrow the gap and scored two points in the sixth end and even stole one in the seventh, the skip of Canada Rachel Homan delivered a great last stone in the eighth end to add two points for her team and help them regain the command of the match.
After scoring two points in the ninth end, Switzerland fell behind 8-6 into the last end, and eventually gave up when it seemed impossible to steal enough points to level the score.
China have just recorded their first win of the tournament at daytime, edging South Korea 7-6 in an extremely close game. But a last stone from the skip of Germany Daniela Jentsch in the extra end earned three points for her team and sealed the match 10-7.
"I think the first stone (of the last two stones) was very important for me, because I knew I could find the way to takeout her stones. The last shot, the way was still open and I was lucky to peel again on the same path so I was happy that I could choose that path again, " said Jentsch after the match.
China coach Tan Weidong ascribed the loss to too many mistakes.
"We played well in the first half, but there were too many technical faults in the second. I think the loss can spur us to fight more toughly in the remaining games, " said Tan.
China will play on Tuesday against Denmark, who lost all the five games until now, and United States, who ranked antepenultimate on the standings with only two wins.
