BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Marine disasters, including storms and high sea waves, left 60 people dead or missing in 2016, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said in a report Wednesday.

The annual report said total direct economic losses caused by various marine disasters amounted to 5 billion yuan (about 730 million U.S. dollars) in the year.

Most of those losses were attributed to storm surges in the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong and Hebei.

The fatalities were mainly caused by sea waves, which also led to direct economic losses of 37 million yuan (about 5.4 million U.S. dollars), according to the report.

Gao Zhongwen, spokesperson for the SOA, said the figures recorded in 2016 were lower than the average in the past 10 years.
