BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Canada, led by skip Rachel Homan, carried their dominance throughout the World Women's Curling Championships 2017 and breezed past Russia 8-3 here on Sunday to lift their 16th world title.
Canada won all the 13 matches in the event and the final victory came as no surprise for the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics champions although Homan said it was not easy as it looked.
"I'm so excited, and it was a tough competition. I'm just so happy to win one more gold medal for Canada," said Homan.
"I feel good playing here in Beijing, the venue is great and Beijing is a great city, people are very nice here," she added.
Russia lost all the two previous clashes against Canada in the round robin and play-offs and they were still unable to find the solutions to face the Sochi Olympics winners today.
The final was Canada all the way since the beginning as they took a 6-1 lead after six ends and scored two more in the eighth to force Russia to give up the match.
"Of course we wanted to win the game, but there were too many mistakes today and we gave the chance to them. But the competition is a great experience for us. We had won three bronze medals in the past three years, this time we won the silver and I'm very happy," said Russia's skip Anna Sidorova.
Earlier in the morning , Scotland beat Sweden 6-4 in a match which they come from behind to take the bronze medals.
"That was a really strong team performance out there. We came out fighting for that medal because we knew we really wanted it. It's been a tough week, a lot of ups and a lot of downs. To come away with a medal is satisfying. We played a fantastic last end, I am really pleased," said the skip of Scotland, Eve Muirhead.
Sweden took the early advantage in the first half as their skip Anna Hasselborg delivered a hit and stay to earn one point for a 3-1 lead.
Scotland levelled the score in the sixth end when Muirhead's last stone took out a Swedish stone to add two points for them. The measuring device was called in the seventh end and it denied Sweden's second point, meaning they only got a 4-3 lead.
After this, Scotland took the command of the match as they scored one point in the eighth end and stolen two more in the ninth and tenth two claimed the victory.
The World Women's Curling Championships serves as a qualifier for next year's PyeongChang Winter Olympics and seven teams that have the most qualification points from the 2016 and 2017 World Championships will directly qualify for the Olympics.
These seven teams are Canada, Britain, South Korea, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and United States. Since South Korea will not occupy the place as they are the host team of next year's Olympics, the eighth-ranked Japan got a ticket to Pyeongchang.
Teams which played in any of the four previous World Championships, including China, are eligible to vie for the two other Olympic slots at the Olympic Qualification Event to be held in Pilsen, the Czech Republic.
