5.0-magnitude quake strikes off SW coast of Japan's Hokkaido, no tsunami warning

TOKYO, March 28 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck off the south west coast of Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido on Tuesday morning, the weather agency said.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor, which registered 1 on Japan's seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7, struck at a latitude of 41.9 degrees north and a longitude of 138.5 degrees east.

The JMA said the quake struck off the southwest coast of Hokkaido and occurred at a depth of 10 km.

The weather agency did not issue a tsunami warning as a result of the quake, which struck at 7:31 a.m. local time.

The quake registered on the seismic level in the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Akita, the JMA said.

There were no immediate reports of accidents or injury as a result of the quake, according to officials in the areas.

Japan's nuclear watchdog said there were no abnormalities at any nuclear power stations in the area as a result of the quake.
