PHNOM PENH, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported 510 dengue fever cases in the first 15 weeks of 2017, down 62 percent from the 1,366 cases over the same period last year, according to an official report on Friday.

"The incidence rate was 3.1 cases out of 100,000 people," said the report posted to the website of National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control.

It added that no fatality was reported during the first 15 weeks of this year, while three were reportedly killed by the virus over the same period last year.

Huy Rekol, director of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, said that more than 71 percent of the patients were children aged between 5 and 14 years old.

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of an Aedes mosquito which is a day-biting mosquito. Its symptoms include sudden onset of high fever which can last from 3 to 7 days, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and rash.

In Cambodia, the outbreak of the virus usually begins in the rainy season from May to October.
