GENEVA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- A pair of pear-shaped diamond earrings was sold at a record auction price of 57.4 million U.S. dollars at Sotheby's auction house spring sale here on Tuesday night.

The earrings, one, a vivid blue diamond named "Apollo Blue" weighing 14.54 carats, and the second, an intense pink diamond of 16 carats, called "Artemis Pink", were sold separately for 42.1 million dollars and 15.3 million dollars to the same anonymous buyer.

"I am delighted that the stones will remain together as earrings," said David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby's jewellery division.

Sotheby's had presented the diamonds during its pre-sale exhibitions in Hong Kong, London, Dubai, and New York.

"Individually, each of the diamonds is absolutely remarkable, and together they are just breath-taking," described Bennett.

The previous record price for earrings was set by two pear-shaped white diamond earrings, named "Miroir de l'Amour," that Christie's sold for 17.7 million dollars in November 2016.
