NEW DELHI, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday condoled on the loss of lives and property in neighbouring Sri Lanka due to floods and landslides, officials said.
"India condoles the loss of lives and property in Sri Lanka due to flooding and landslides. We stand with our Sri Lankan brothers and sisters in their hour of need," an official statement quoting Modi as having said.
Flooding and mudslides triggered by monsoon rains in Sri Lanka killed at least 100 people, besides leaving 99 others missing.
Rescue agencies said thousands of people had been forced to leave their homes in wake of the deluge, prompting authorities to launch massive rescue operations.
"Our ships are being dispatched with relief material," Modi said.
Reports said the flooding is believed to be the worst since May 2003 when a similar flooding killed 250 people, and destroyed 10,000 homes.
