Chinese FM sends condolences to Sri Lanka over flood, landslides

BEIJING, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Sunday sent a message of condolences to his Sri Lankan counterpart Ravi Karunanayake over the country's recent flood and landslide disasters.

In his message, Wang expressed condolences to the victims of the disasters and extended profound sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, saying that China stands ready to exert all efforts to help the Sri Lankan government with its disaster relief work and provide Sri Lanka with what it can offer.

He also said that China and Sri Lanka are traditional friendly neighbors, adding that China believes the Sri Lankan people will definitely be able to overcome the disasters and rebuild their homeland under the leadership of the Sri Lankan government.

The death toll from Sri Lanka's devastating flood and landslides triggered by monsoon rains has reached 146 by Sunday noon, with 112 people missing and 442,000 people affected, according to the latest statistics of Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center.
