5 injured, dozens of houses damaged in earthquake in Indonesia

JAKARTA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- A powerful quake striking central Indonesia on Monday evening has left five people wounded, and dozens of houses and buildings damaged, national disaster agency said here on Tuesday.

The victims and damages were took place in Poso district of Central Sulawesi province, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the agency.

The natural disaster also destroyed a church and two office buildings, and damaged a bridge, the spokesman said in a text message.

A total of 14 moderate aftershocks has followed the 6.6-magnitude main shock centered in 38 km northwest Poso district, he said.

Emergency relief efforts have been undertaken, involving personnel of disaster management agency, policemen and volunteers, Sutopo said.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
