NEW DELHI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as Mangalyaan, has completed 1,000 earth days in its orbit Monday, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said.
"MOM completes 1000 Earth days in its orbit June 19 well beyond its designed mission life of six months. 1,000 Earth days corresponds to 973.24 Mars Sols (Martian Solar day) and MOM completed 388 orbits," a statement issued by ISRO said.
The interplanetary mission of ISRO was launched on Nov. 5, 2013, and inserted into Martian orbit on Sept. 24, 2014 in its first attempt.
According to ISRO, MOM is credited with many laurels like cost-effectiveness, short period of realization, economical mass-budget, miniaturization of five heterogeneous science payloads etc.
"Satellite is in good health and continues to work as expected," the statement said. "Scientific analysis of the data received from the Mars Orbiter spacecraft is in progress."
ISRO has already launched announcement of opportunity programs for researchers in the country to use Mangalyaan's data for R&D. The Mars Color Camera, one of the scientific payloads onboard Mangalyaan, has produced more than 715 images so far.
