Floods in India's northeastern Assam claim 22 lives

NEW DELHI, July 7 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 people were killed due to floods in India's northeastern state of Assam, officials said Friday.

"So far 22 persons have lost their lives in flood in Assam," an official said. "The Brahmaputra river is constantly flowing above the danger level at five places including Guwahati."

According to officials, nearly 400,000 people were affected in the current surge of water across 16 districts of the state.

"District administrations organized medical camps and are also providing relief materials to the people in affected areas," an official posted in Guwahati told Xinhua. "Besides rescue measures are also going in full swing."

Chief Minister of Assam Sarbanand Sonowal held a review meeting in the wake of the floods and instructed all the concerned departments to provide necessary help to the affected people, a government spokesman said.

Meanwhile, India's state-run broadcaster - All India Radio (AIR) said weather department has issued a rain alert in Uttarakhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jarkhand, Assam and Meghalaya.

Floods are an annual occurrence in Assam during the monsoon season.
