Earthquake measuring 5.3 on Richter scale jolts Crete island: Greek seismologists

ATHENS, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted Crete island on Saturday night, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory.

No injuries have been reported so far to local authorities, according to Greek national news agency AMNA.

The tremor's epicenter was located in the sea area off the coast of Ierapetra city in southeastern Crete at about 10 kilometers depth, according to preliminary estimates by Greek seismologists.

Earlier the EuroMediterranean Seismological Center (EMCS) had given an estimate of 5.6 on the Richter scale for the same quake.
