UNITED NATIONS, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Security Council on Monday condemned the Taliban-claimed terror attack in Kabul, the Afghan capital, which resulted in more than 70 people killed or injured.
According to a press statement, the members of the Security Council condemned "in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack."
"They expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Afghanistan and they wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured," it said.
The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
They underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice and urged all countries to cooperate actively with the Afghan government and all other relevant authorities in this regard, according to the statement.
The members of the Security Council reiterated that "any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed."
The members reaffirmed the need for all countries to combat terrorism by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law.
The blast reportedly happened at around 6:40 a.m. Monday (0210 GMT) when a Toyota Corolla exploded in the city's west. The Taliban later claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement to the media.
