Spanish PM calls for assisting Barcelona crash victims

MADRID, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called for assisting Barcelona crash victims on Thursday via his official Twitter account after the city was hit by a terrorist attack.

"Priority: assisting the victims at Las Ramblas and helping the Security Forces to do their job", he wrote, adding that he was in contact with all the administrations.

Rajoy, who is in Spain's northwestern region of Galicia talked to the president of the regional government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and has planned to travel to Barcelona, local media reported.

At least 13 people are dead, according to local media and around 20 were injured after a vehicle rammed into a crowd of people in the city's famous street of Las Ramblas.

Latest reports said two people are barricaded in a restaurant with hostages and the police are negotiating.
