BRASILIA, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and another 20 were injured on Wednesday in a 36-vehicle pileup along the Carvalho Pinto Highway in Brazil's Sao Paulo state.
A thick cloud of smoke from a nearby fire blocked visibility along the highway in the city of Jacarei, leading cars and trucks to smash into one another around 7:40 a.m. local time, highway police said.
The main catalyst of the accident was a truck transporting paint, which drove into the smoke, crashed and caught on fire.
News website Globo published photos of fires burning along the elevated portion of the highway, and the charred remains of gutted vehicles and trucks.
The body of one of the fatal victims was found below the highway, the other was retrieved from a car that had been wedged between two trucks.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control after an hour and a half.
Rescue teams were still working to retrieve victims.
