VILNIUS, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Director of Lithuania's Labour Exchange faces a fine due to significant personal data leak from the institution's website discovered a day before, the country's State Data Protection Inspectorate (VDAI) said on Wednesday.

Ligita Valyte, head of Lithuania's Labour Exchange, might pay at least 300 euros fine for website's security loophole which left open thousands of personal codes, including that of Lithuania's minister of social affairs, local website 15min.lt reported.

"VDAI supervises such cases and gets involved in order to eliminate security gaps; we will also analyze the case at Labour Exchange," Raminta Sinkeviciute-Seckuviene, a spokeswoman at VDAI, was quoted as saying by the website.

She added that personal code assigned to the person is unique and unchangeable according to Lithuanian laws.

The personal code is one of the most important search criteria in the state's data bases and registers, therefore "illegal handling of the code might lead to the infringement of the inviolability of private life," the spokeswoman added.

As the State Data Protection Inspectorate explains, in case the infringement of personal data protection has been carried out by legal entity, the head of the entity or another responsible person faces a fine amounting from 300 to 1,150 euros, while repeated violation imposes a fine amounting from 1,100 to 3,000 euros.

Local media reported on Tuesday about thousands of openly available personal codes on Labour Exchange website.

The Labour Exchange said the data can't be assessed publicly because of a system error and the security gap was eliminated soon after media's reports.

Lithuanian Labour Exchange is an executive agency under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, responsible for the provision of labour market services to jobseekers and employers, as well as the implementation of labour market policy measures.
